Mumbai, 25 July 2025: A Thai national woman gave birth mid-flight aboard an Air India Express aircraft traveling from Muscat to Mumbai, creating a rare moment of airborne motherhood. The delivery occurred with the timely support of the airline’s cabin crew and a nurse who happened to be one of the passengers. The quick-thinking flight team acted swiftly as the woman went into labor at cruising altitude, converting the rear of the aircraft into a makeshift maternity area to ensure a safe delivery.
The pilots, upon being informed of the emergency, alerted Air Traffic Control and requested a priority landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. As the flight made its descent, emergency medical teams and an ambulance were kept on standby. Upon landing, both the mother and her newborn were immediately transferred to a nearby hospital for further care. A female staff member from Air India Express accompanied them to offer continued emotional and logistical support.
Air India Express later confirmed that the mother and baby were stable and recovering well. The airline is also coordinating closely with the Consulate General of Thailand in Mumbai to assist the woman and her child in their onward journey to Thailand.
A spokesperson from Air India Express praised the presence of mind and compassion shown by the crew and the onboard nurse, calling it an inspiring example of teamwork and humanity. The rare mid-air birth not only highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness but also turned an ordinary flight into a memorable story of life, care, and international cooperation.
