Congress MP Benny Behanan today raised a crucial issue in the Lok Sabha, urging the central government to extend the Kochi Metro Rail up to Cochin International Airport, which currently lacks direct metro connectivity.
Highlighting the significance of the airport, Behanan noted that Cochin International is among the busiest airports in India, catering to millions of passengers, including a large number of NRIs and domestic travelers from Kerala. The current absence of metro access to the airport presents challenges for travelers and adds pressure on road infrastructure.
He proposed an extension of the metro line from Aluva to Angamaly, a move that he believes would greatly improve last-mile connectivity, ease congestion on national highways, and support a multi-modal international transport system.
Benny Behanan appealed to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to immediately initiate a feasibility study and fast-track the extension process, stating that efficient and sustainable connectivity is vital for Kerala’s economic and infrastructural growth.
The demand has been widely supported by local stakeholders and is expected to add momentum to long-standing calls for enhanced airport-metro integration in Kochi.
