A major land subsidence incident took place late Monday night in Jogta area of Dhanbad, where an entire house caved in due to underground coal mining activities.
According to local residents, loud cracking sounds were heard around midnight. Within minutes, the ground beneath a residential house sank, causing the structure to collapse completely. Fortunately, the family residing inside managed to rush out just in time, narrowly escaping a major tragedy.
Eyewitnesses reported that household items, including furniture, utensils, and personal belongings, were buried under the debris. Although no casualties have been reported, the family has suffered huge financial losses.
Locals have once again blamed BCCL (Bharat Coking Coal Limited) and the district administration for negligence. They allege that despite repeated warnings and previous incidents, no permanent measures have been taken to prevent land subsidence in the coal belt region.
The affected family has demanded immediate rehabilitation and compensation, while nearby residents are living in fear of further subsidence.
District officials have assured that a team will survey the site and appropriate action will be taken. Meanwhile, experts suggest that unchecked underground mining is the root cause of frequent land subsidence incidents in Dhanbad’s coalfields.
