In a major development, 11 gates of Chandil Dam in Saraikela-Kharsawan district of Jharkhand were opened on Tuesday after the water level rose sharply due to continuous heavy rainfall.
As a result, the water level of Subarnarekha River surged suddenly, creating flood-like conditions in low-lying areas.
According to officials, the dam was filling up rapidly due to incessant rain, forcing authorities to release water. This has now triggered a flood alert across several districts of Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
The administration has urged people living in riverbank villages to remain alert and shift to safer places. NDRF and SDRF teams have also been put on standby for emergency rescue operations.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has warned of more rainfall in the coming days, which could worsen the situation further.
