Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, underscoring the depth of the strategic partnership between India and Russia.
After the main proceedings of the SCO Summit, the two leaders travelled together to the venue of their bilateral talks. According to PM Modi, his conversations with President Putin are “always insightful,” reflecting the strong rapport the two leaders share.
During the meeting, discussions were held on a range of issues including global and regional developments, energy cooperation, defence ties, and ways to strengthen economic engagement. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade, which has seen significant growth in recent years, particularly in the energy sector.
The talks also touched upon collaboration in emerging sectors such as technology, connectivity, and infrastructure development. Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s focus on building resilient supply chains and enhancing cooperation in areas that benefit both nations.
President Putin, on his part, expressed appreciation for India’s role within the SCO and reiterated Russia’s support for enhancing India’s participation in Eurasian platforms. The leaders also exchanged views on the evolving security situation in the region and underlined the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing global challenges.
The India–Russia partnership, often described as a “special and privileged strategic partnership,” has been a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy for decades. This latest engagement between PM Modi and President Putin reaffirms the intent of both countries to further deepen ties amidst shifting global dynamics.
