Dhanbad: The District Mining Department has issued notices to major coal companies for the recovery of ₹183.85 billion, directing them to deposit the amount within 15 days from the date of notice. In case of failure, certificate cases will be initiated against the defaulting companies.
The notices have been served to Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Mugma Area, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Chasnala, and Tata Steel Limited, Jharia Division.
District Mining Officer Ritesh Raj Tigga stated that during the period 2000 to 2010, the companies carried out coal mining beyond the permitted areas. The recovery action is being taken in compliance with the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
According to official records, BCCL has been asked to deposit ₹17,337.87 crore for 46 collieries located in various areas including Jharia, Katras, Kusunda, Lodna, Sijua, Barora, Bastacolla, Eastern and Western Jharia. Tata Steel Limited, Jharia Division has been directed to pay ₹385.19 crore, ECL Mugma Area ₹328.77 crore, and SAIL Chasnala ₹333.42 crore.
The State Government has authorized the District Mining Officer and Assistant Mining Officer to recover the dues. A notification in this regard has been issued by Arva Rajkamal, Secretary, Department of Mines and Geology.
Officials said that hearings of the coal companies were completed earlier, and with the issuance of notices, preparations have been made to proceed with legal action. Failure to deposit the amount within the stipulated time will result in certificate proceedings against the companies.
