🇮🇳 India Launches First-Ever E-Truck Incentive Scheme under PM Modi’s Green Mobility Vision
In a landmark move towards sustainable freight mobility, the Government of India has launched the nation’s first incentive scheme for electric trucks (E-Trucks) under the PM e-Drive initiative. Spearheaded by Union Minister for Heavy Industries & Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s green mobility vision and India’s Net-Zero emissions target by 2070.
🔋 Game-Changer for India’s Freight Sector
The scheme introduces direct financial incentives of up to ₹9.6 lakh per vehicle for electric trucks, marking a first-of-its-kind support for the heavy-duty EV segment in India. It aims to cut emissions from the freight sector, where diesel trucks—despite being only 3% of vehicles—contribute 42% of transport-related greenhouse gases.
The incentives cover N2 (3.5 to 12 tonnes) and N3 (above 12 to 55 tonnes) category electric trucks under CMVR norms. Articulated vehicles in the N3 category are also eligible for support.
🔧 Mandatory Warranty & Fleet Modernization
To ensure reliability, manufacturers must provide:
Battery warranty: 5 years or 5 lakh km
Vehicle & motor warranty: 5 years or 2.5 lakh km
Only vehicles replacing old polluting trucks are eligible—thus promoting fleet modernization and emission reduction simultaneously.
🚛 5,600 E-Trucks Targeted | 1,100 in Delhi Alone
The scheme aims to deploy 5,600 e-trucks across India, with 1,100 trucks expected in Delhi alone, backed by an estimated ₹100 crore outlay to tackle severe air pollution in the capital.
Key industries to benefit include cement, ports, steel, and logistics, with major OEMs like Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, and Volvo Eicher already engaged in indigenous EV truck manufacturing.
🇮🇳 Boost to Make in India & Clean Logistics
The plan has received overwhelming support from both e-truck manufacturers and users. SAIL (Steel Authority of India Ltd) has pledged to procure 150 e-trucks within two years, and committed that at least 15% of its hired vehicles will be electric.
The incentives will be offered as upfront discounts on vehicle cost and reimbursed via the PM e-Drive portal on a first-come, first-served basis.
🌍 Towards a Cleaner, Self-Reliant Future
This visionary step supports the Government’s goal of building a self-reliant electric mobility ecosystem. It seeks to reduce logistics costs, lower diesel dependence, and improve urban air quality, taking India a step closer to a low-carbon, sustainable future.
